Over the last 10 years, Smart Company has run the Smart 50 Awards to celebrate and recognise the frontrunners in the Australian small-to-medium business arena. Whether it’s franchising, importing, innovation, community support, marketing, or retailing, Smart Company judge entrants in an array of categories so that they can showcase small businesses in the areas they really shine.

This year in the retailing category, our customers absolutely cleaned up! LUXBMX and Mountain Bikes Direct, who are both Brisbane-based retailers, came in at number 20 and number 26 respectively. Queensland-based retailer, Tentworld ranked at number 28, and took out the coveted title of Top Retailer. We’re so proud of our customers and we’re absolutely stoked to be a part of their retail journey! So much so, that we’d love to boast about them a little more...

Mountain Bikes Direct

The team at Mountain Bikes Direct are a true testament to a cloud-based remote working environment. Since launching in 2012, their team of 6 work across the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Canada, and Colorado. Their commitment to a superior product offering and customer service to match are two key factors that have been crucial to their success. But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Just three years ago, the team had to decide whether they were going to make some drastic changes and turn the business around, or wind down their operations entirely. After cracking down on their excess expenditure Mountain Bikes Direct have thrived. In addition to the Smart 50 Awards, the team were also winners in the QLD category of the Telstra Business Awards this year, came in as finalists in the Online Retail Industry Awards in 2017, The Hot 30 Under 30, and a slew of others. We can’t wait to see where they go from here!

Tentworld

While many companies fail to adapt to market changes as the years wear on, family owned and operated Tentworld has stood the test of time. Forty-four years after Tentworld first opened its doors, they’ve taken out the title of ‘Top Retailer’ at the Smart 50 Awards this year, and for good reason. Competing in the same space as retail giants like BCF and Ray’s Outdoors, Tentworld remains the largest independent camping store group in Australia. Last financial year, the team of 60 celebrated $30.9 million in revenue and over the last three years, have grown their revenue by 101%. Not bad for a team of just 60 staff! Even with such a successful business, General Manager Jon still finds time a couple of times a year for camping trips.

LUXBMX

Operating out of their beautiful store in the inner-Brisbane suburb of West End, BMX and accessories retailer, LUXBMX has grown leaps and bounds since opening in 2010. Founders Evan Jaques and Mitch Wood, who started on a shoestring budget, are now selling their products across Australia, internationally, and are preparing to expand their market even further with the launch of Amazon later this year. Although they didn’t have a huge advantage over their fellow competitors in the beginning, their focus on staying positive and forging great relationships with customers and suppliers has seen them carve out their niche. Over the last three years, the company has grown a whopping 121% with no plans to slow down anytime soon. Congratulations Evan And Mitch!
