PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN) Error



Paypal’s IPN (Instant Payment Notification) system is just simply a response sent back to Neto from Paypal to confirm the order went through without any problems.

Customers may receive the following email from Paypal about IPN issues:

Please check your server that handles PayPal Instant Payment Notifications (IPN). Instant Payment Notifications sent to the following URL(s) are failing: (Your URL will be given)

If you do not recognize this URL, you may be using a service provider that is using IPN on your behalf. Please contact your service provider with the above information. If this problem continues, IPNs may be disabled for your account. Thank you for your prompt attention to this issue.

This will generally happen when you’ve come come across from a different platform or have been using the Paypal Standard integration at one stage.

When using our Paypal Express integration, this process will already be handled by Neto and doesn’t need to be on. Even though you may be receiving these messages, it doesn’t cause any problems with your integration and customers will still be able to make payments without any issues. However it can be frustrating to get constant emails about it.

How do I fix this?

  1. Login to Paypal and click the Profile button on the top right hand side (next to Log Out button) and click Profile and settings.

  2. Click on the Selling Tools tab, find Instant payment notifications and click the Update link.


  3. Press the Choose IPN Settings button.


  4. Select Do not receive IPN messages (Disabled) and click Save.
